Somali supermodel Waris Dirie, Desert Flower

The Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) 22 July – 8 August has announced some of its film line-up – including a film about Somali supermodel Waris Dirie, Desert Flower (Germany/Austria/UK (120 mins, dir. Sherry Hormann)). Based on the best-selling autobiography of Waris Dirie, Desert Flower is the inspirational true story of a Somali girl who became a supermodel in England.

Fleeing the deserts of Somalia as a teenager to escape an arranged marriage, Dirie’s remarkable journey took her across the world, from poverty in Mogadishu to fame and success in London, and led her to represent the UN as a fierce advocate against female circumcision. (Contains two scenes that may distress sensitive viewers). In English, some Somali with English subtitles. Suitable for ages 15+. Details at http://www.melbournefilmfestival.com.au/index.php
